Description: Join us for coffee and a brief welcome followed by three breakout sessions. Attendees will rotate between the three groups,with Masters Committee members presenting the material. After lunch, participants will divide into groups. Those working on a particular level are encouraged to bring swatches, projects, etc. to review with Masters Committee members as well as worsted weight yarn and needles. Homework: All levels: If you want to block a swatch along with the blocking demo you will need the following swatch: Using worsted weight yarn similar to the yarn you are using or plan to use for your swatches and appropriate needles, CO 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 4". Bind off all stitches. Do not block. Description: Short rows are a simple way of adding color and design to your knits. After the concept of short rows is understood with a basic demonstration and sample knitting, learn how to use short rows instead of intarsia to put wonderful color and design into your garments. There are fewer ends to weave in, and the need for following a chart is eliminated. This is a form of freeform knitting that you won't be able to put down. By using self striping yarns you'll achieve a look that can never be duplicated from one garment to another.

Description: Mosaic Crochet may look intricate, but it's not. Once you know the secrets and are able to make wonderful designs in Mosaic Crochet, your friends will ask how you did it! Several of the many Mosaic Crochet methods will be taught in this class. You'll learn how to make horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines in Mosaic Crochet, enabling you to "draw" geometrics and all kinds of stunning designs with a crochet hook and yarn. This class includes instructions on making post stitches, which is a technique found in the CGOA Masters of Advanced Crochet Stitches and Techniques program.

Use these properties to determine what projects are suited for which yarns. Be a better shopper as well as a yarn user. Bring in present yarns in your stash to see what it might want to be "when it grows up."
Homework: Work TWO identical swatches of at least 3 inches by 3 inches in any of the yarns you want to test out (that is, work two of the same yarns). Wash and block ONE of these two swatches as per label's instructions.

Description: It's like two bracelets in one! Although crocheted in the round, when finished the bracelet flattens out to show two sides to its personality. You decide which of the two colors will be on display each time you put it on. Either way your bracelet is edged with lovely contrasting beads. The kit comes pre-strung, so by the end of class you will be well on the way to completing your bracelet. Just a few more rounds to go, then sew on the toggle clasp following the illustrated instructions in the kit.

Description: Blocking improves your finished work by balancing the fabric and establishing drape. It makes seaming easier by flattening selvedges and creating equally sized pieces. Yet many knitters are hesitant to block their work. In this fun, hands on class students explore blocking for many types of hand knits. We will examine equipment and methods for correct blocking and discuss how to choose a blocking method considering both stitch pattern and fiber content. Students block lace, Fair Isle, textured and shaped pieces. We block using a variety of techniques and equipment. Care and cleaning of hand knits is also covered.

Description: This is a variation and nontraditional method of using a broom stick and hook to make a delicate flower motif. In this case a large knitting needle is used as the broomstick. Learn how to make this flower motif super quickly once it is mastered. It looks like those made with a flower loom but it is done with a hook. Learn to join as you go, if desired, or learn Jenny's Asian joining technique. This motif uses minimal yarn so it is perfect for that fabulously expensive yarn that you want to make go further than usual.

In this class we will explore the various uses for the in-the-round technique called "magic loop," as well as the versatile Judy's Magic Cast On. Description: The most difficult part of a crochet pattern is working into the foundation chain. Learn how to avoid the foundation chain by making the chain AND the first row of stitches at the same time. You will learn the basic foundation stitches (sc, hdc, dc and tr) and how to use them in all your patterns and designs. You'll also learn why they are, as one student called them, "a lifesaver". Some people call these stitches "chainless foundation," or "no-chain foundation" or "chain-free foundation" stitches. This is a good class to take if you're interested in the CGOA Masters Program.

Description: Learn a variety of ways to Cast On and Bind Off other than long tail cast on and the regular bind off. Many of the techniques discussed have a mirror image cast on to the bind off, for a perfectly finished garment. New techniques will include: casting on and binding off with picots, the "tubular look" cast on and bind off, cable cast on vs knitted cast on, and provisional cast on. Description: This unusual type of Aran construction is controversial as to its historic authenticity. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating concept, which results in a stunning garment that is fun to knit. While knitting a small sampler sweater from the neck down, traditional pattern motifs will be worked, including bobbles, traveling stitches, knit/purl motifs, baby cables, background stitches and more! The neckline studied will be shaped for a comfortable fit by utilizing increases and casting on extra stitches.

Description: Do you have a basket of unfinished projects or does the thought of Level 2 of the TKGA Masters Program fill you with terror? This two-day class (you can take only Day 1, if you wish) will give you the confidence to finish any project. Day 1 focuses on seaming. The morning session covers vertical seams (stockinette, garter, reverse stockinette, seed, K1P1 and K2P2 ribbing). The afternoon covers horizontal seams (straight bound off edges, stairstep, three-needle, and kitchener stitch). As part of the course you will assemble a complete finishing reference guide for future use.

Description: Crochetmorphosis is another name for how to convert knit to crochet. The inspiration for this class is from wanting to crochet sweaters with unusual knitting construction methods. From a designer in both mediums, you will learn the basics of magically transforming a basic knit pattern into crochet. Once the basic technique is understood, you can use many yarn textures, stitch patterns and colors to create a one-of-a-kind garment. Why should knitters have all the fun creating one-of-a-kind garments? Each person will receive the knit and crochet handouts.
Homework: Ch 31. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each of the remaining chains. (30 sts). Ch 1, turn. Work in sc until swatch meas. Approx. 6". Fasten off.

Description: Knitted skirts are not just for those with slender hips and model size dimensions. In fact, the nature of knitted fabric makes them perfect for all sorts of shapes and sizes. Learn the secrets to creating a skirt that looks good on your body. Start with an exploration of fabrics to understand what works best and why. Next gather measurements needed to create a design, custom fit to your lower half. Finally, study skirt structures to see how to apply them to your own design. Leave class ready to design and knit the perfect skirt for your body.
Homework: Prepare a 6" x 6" swatch in the desired skirt stitch pattern. Please block swatch before coming to class.

There are several methods for creating short rows and each will be taught, along with the benefit of using that particular method. Description: Even if you are computer-challenged, you may want to know what all the fuss is about and what the possibilities are that computers offer. Computers have been given a lot of attention lately. Deemed the key to the future, see how designers and fiber artists can use electronic media as a very useful tool to aid the creative process. See a demonstration at work. Get a broad overview of realistic achievements and what you can expect to get out of the computer. Even discuss the pros and cons of different systems (IBM-compatibles vs. Macs). Sample some of the various software available. "CAD" has been a new and exciting way for me to "visualize" my work beforehand. It has allowed me to experiment a whole lot more without a whole lot of extra investment in materials and time. Also covered will be down-to earth information on price, peripherals, online help services and the dreaded "learning curve."

Description: This class explores several of the techniques from master crocheter the late Bill Elmore. In the Elmore method of working with various extended crochet stitches, crocheters will learn how to use the techniques with beading; learn how to create stitch heights between the regular crochet stitches. The class will explore various uncommon foundation methods such as the "Double Face Foundation" and the "Lock Loop Foundation." This class takes your crocheting to a higher level.

Description: Learn to create terrific textures in Tunisian crochet including assorted puffs, popcorns, post stitches, chains, and cables that look knit. Use these textured stitches alone or combine them to create Aran style projects with flair. Learn ways to join Tunisian pieces with nearly invisible seams or using the seam as a design element. Learn a treasure trove of tips and tricks for working Tunisian crochet with ease including handling side edge problems and working into the foundation chain.

Mitered squares are not new to the knitter but now there is a wonderful crochet version that actually looks like its knit counterpart. Learn all the techniques needed to master mitered crochet and be inspired to step outside the squares. Students will learn to work in two different directions using a modular mitered technique that is similar to, but is not like, any other - and then the fun begins. Why not try it in Double crochet too, and let's leave out the center stitches and see what happens. Let's take the basic technique and Mix it all up. And what about self striping yarn? Description: Continental Knitting is well known as a faster more efficient way to knit. Utilized in parts of Europe as well as the United States it is often envied by people who knit American Style. It is essential for Fair Isle knitting when using 2 colors at a time, one in each hand. Knitting, purling, ribbing, decreases such as Knit 2 together and Slip, Slip, Knit, and increases such as knit in the front and the back of a stitch and Make One will be shown. We'll discuss when to use Continental Knitting as opposed to American Style Knitting, as well as the value in learning the new technique. This class is great for people who have never been able to master the technique.

Description: Learn the fascinating Swedish technique of tvåändsstickning, or twined knitting, by knitting a fingerless mitten using worsted weight yarn. Once the wristlet is finished we will cut the steeks and work a finished buttonband edging. In order to finish the wristlet by the end of the 6 hours, you may need to work on it over your lunch period. Many people will finish during the class and we will be able to demonstrate cutting and finishing their steeks in class. Not everyone will finish, but enough will that you will feel confident in finishing your wristlet once the class is finished. Sample steeks will be available to practice on for those who do not finish their wristlet in time to work their own.

Join a new skein of yarn or a new color without losing that first stitch. See ways of attaching buttons as you work. Create invisible circular bind offs on a neck where the beginning and end are absolutely imperceptible. Weave in those little ends that are too short to put through a darning needle. Take away lots of small "fix-its" and improve those details.
Homework: 1 - With worsted/aran wt yarn and appropriate sized double-pointed or short (12 or 16") circular needles, cast on enough sts to go circs or minimal amount of sts on dpn's (maybe 12). Join, being careful not to twist. There is even garter stitch and reverse stockinette I-cord to add to the already many uses for this fabulous technique. Learn the various ways of attaching I-cord to knitting and how to create borders and trims for your garments.
Homework: You will need two colors of the same weight yarn, a light and a dark color, size # 4. Using the darker color, knit 3 samples in stockinette stitch measuring 4"by 4" (cast on about 20 sts) using a size # 6 needle in the dark color. Do not bind off, place the stitches on a holder or leave on the needle.

Description: Students will learn about Maine mitten construction by knitting a child-sized mitten in two colors, circularly on double-pointed needles. (If you prefer, you can use the magic loop or two circulars.) Techniques to be covered include working with two colors in 3 different styles, yarn dominance, developing the thumb gusset by increasing in full pattern multiples, traditional motifs used in Maine mittens, and tip shaping at the end of the mitten which maintains the patterning. Description: Besides yarn, knitters and crocheters collect bags -- lots of them! Some we buy and some are given to us as swag. Some look great, but some of them could use a facelift. With a few simple calculations and some basic skills, learn to convert those perfectly sized (but a little bit ugly) bags into a show stopper using your favorite techniques and stitch patterns. Any yarn can be used and no felting is required. All you need is a little yarn, a dash of creativity and the willingness to never see that "ugly" bag ever again.

Supplies to bring: Two contrasting colors of the same weight yarn, either sport or worsted weight. A pair of appropriately sized circular or short straight needles. (Example: Size 4.5 mm or 5 mm (US size 7 or 8) for worsted yarn, size 3.75 mm or 4 mm (US size 5 or 6) for sport yarn.)
Description: The Norwegian Purl, a variation of the conventional Continental purl, is noted for its superior tension control and ease of execution. The yarn always stays behind the work, making ribbing a breeze and two-color textured knitting a pleasure. A swatch will be knitted in class to practice this technique and its applications: Proper tensioning of the yarn, the conventional Continental purl and knit stitches, the Norwegian purl, purl garter stitch, ribbing with the Norwegian purl on the right side and on the wrong side, the Scandinavian method of working with two yarns in the left hand (knitting, purling, and weaving the floats) on the right side and the wrong side of the work, as well as corrugated ribbing on the right side and the wrong side.

Supplies to bring: Wear a tight camisole or leotard if you want to be draped for a pattern. Purely optional: bring any commercial sewing pattern of your choice for any style.
Description: There are many ways to draft an original pattern. Draping is one of them and is never talked about or covered in knitting. With commercial knit fabric, see how garments are constructed right on the body and use this "mock up" as a basis for our knitting. Learn to transpose the pieces onto gridded marker paper to plug in the gauge and figure out areas of simplification. Motifs may be previewed, stitch patterns tried out, and details tested. Most importantly, a personal and customized fit will be ensured. This is a pure demonstration on two volunteers from the audience.

Description: Add the best finishing touch to your knit or crochet project with this class. Make your garments stand out from all the rest by having the perfect finishing edge or extra adornment. Add an edge with a touch of class or a little attitude if you wish. Discover which edge is best for the job at hand. Perhaps a Chanel edge or a bouquet of roses. Students will work 5 different edges, get notes on many more and see their practical application and determine suitability. This is a fun class where classic meets funky.

Description: Learn how to use basic cabling techniques to create Celtic inspired panels and motifs. (Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but these gorgeous cables are much easier to knit than they look!)
Homework: Three swatches as follows: Swatch #1: With smooth worsted weight yarn, preferably wool, in a light color and appropriate size knitting needles, CO 15 sts. Work K1 P1 rib for 1", then continue in Stockinette St until swatch measures approx. 2 1/2" from beg, ending after WS row. Do not cut yarn. Do not BO. Slip these live sts onto a holder (or better yet, just keep them on your needle for use in class.) Swatch #2: With smooth worsted weight yarn, preferably wool, in a light color and appropriate size knitting needles, CO 20 sts. Complete same as swatch #1. Swatch #3: With smooth worsted weight yarn, preferably wool, in a light color and appropriate size knitting needles, CO 36 sts. Complete same as swatch #1.
